The children were observed with each parent in a natural play setting. How Alcohol Abuse Affects Parenting When the children were 12 months old, the study found that compared to the control fathers, the alcohol-abusing fathers: Spoke less to their infantExpressed less positive involvementExpressed more negative emotionsReported more aggravation with their infant Observations of the parents with their children also revealed that the alcohol-abusing fathers were less sensitive in their parenting compared to the control fathers. This means they were not aware of their childrens behavior, or not guided by the behavior of their children. The mothers who were married to the alcohol-abusing fathers behaved with their infants much like the mothers married to the control fathers. But, if the mother had her own alcohol abuse problem or exhibited symptoms of depression, it contributed to the less-sensitive parenting of the children. Anxiety, Depression, and Behavioral Problems By the time the children were 18 months old, the children of alcohol-abusing father: Displayed symptoms of anxietyHad more symptoms of depressionDisplayed more externalizing problems, like tantrums If the mothers of the children had no symptoms of depression, only the children of the alcohol-abusing fathers displayed externalizing problems. However, when the mother did have depression symptoms, the children displayed more externalizing problems whether the fathers had alcohol problems or not. Depression Can Play a Greater Role Therefore, the RIA researchers concluded that depressive symptoms in either or both parents may play a larger role in the childs development than alcohol abuse. The researchers wrote that it was important to note that not all of the children in alcohol-abusing families exhibited any problems at all. In fact, there was great diversity among the behavior of the alcohol families and some of their children were doing well. Developing Other Problems The effects of alcohol abuse in child development cannot be considered in isolation. His proposal of rewards convinced many to join the Crusade and help fight with the Byzantine Empire. This tells historians that the battle in Jerusalem was horrific with thousands of people dying and many badly injured, this also shows us that the crusaders had no respect for the Muslims as they killed them all off for fun' and piled up their bo dies. The letter also lets us know that the reason most of the crusaders joined the battle was partly so they could get rich from the things they found in Jerusalem. This letter is extremely helpful because it gives us a strong idea on what the battle was really like on the inside and it also tells us that maybe the crusaders weren't the good guys in the end, slaying innocent people and showing no respect to their own holy land at times. . We have had our wars and internal conflict but one of the biggest mistakes we made is still haunting South-Africa today. We never invested enough in our people and when we did it was only in a small portion of the population. This problem was not so apparent at first because of how rich in high value minerals and agricultural land we had this in turn allowed our economy grow at a great pace. While the mining industry in South-African exports is still very large it is at the lowest point it ever was and will only shrink in times to come. Today our government is struggling with this problem as we have a barley educated population heading into and age of growing globalization where a skilled labor force is critical. Depending how fast we develop and improve as a country will intern influence our global standing as a stable economy that the international market will want to invest in. Priorities of resou rce allocations are made by government and is closely watched and monitored by the world. This makes election times a critical point in economical time as the decisions we make as the people and the government will determine the effects on the economy. Education and Unemployment One of the critical parts of the economy is a skilled work force. Education is the starting point for the development of a laborer or an employed person. It is the foundation of the entire economy and links into every aspect of the economy. If you look at the problems that are caused by an uneducated or largely illiterate nation it is staggering to see how many problems South-Africa is facing is linked to education. Education is linked to employment as a requirement, this intern links to the inverse in uneducated to unemployment and long term unemployment leads to greater levels of poverty and poverty leads to crime. But if there is no job there can be no employment even if you are educated. This is where education promotes entrepreneurship and successful entrepreneurs start businesses that employ more people as they grow. We are moving to into the age of technology that is becoming more and more refined and sophisticated in size. This study was a great source to quantify the scale of the education problem in South-Africa. Currently in South-Africa we have a total population of 50.6 million of that 32.5 million is in working age. Of the 32.5 million of working age only 40.9% are employable, this percentage is also called the absorption rate. Currently average absorption stated by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is at 65%. We are lagging far behind our population is too young and far more people are reaching working age that the amount of people at are retiring. Looking at the effect of the recession our absorption rate fell by 5% from 2008 to 2011 this. The extent of the education problem is also highlighted. Currently of the population older than 19 only 11.2% have tertiary education, 26.2% finished Matric, 37.5% has not finished high school, 18% have not finished primary school and 7% have no education. There has been a steady increase in the levels of education but the big problem is that it is happening too slowly. The biggest reason for this is too many children are dropping out of the education system and eventually adds to the unemployment rate. To show this of the amount of grade 1 students that start only 45.7% make is to matric and of that amount only 29.8% pass the exam. The alarming problem is that government prize themselves with a high matric pass rate but the real figure is much more alarming and a true representation of the situation that our education system finds itself in. Another issue discussed in this study is the quality of your school system and the alarming requirements set for a student to pass The picture painted does look grim but what has the Government done and planned in recent years? Looking at some big news for the education industry on Southfrica.info (2014) the government budgeted for the period of 20142015 20% of the budget for the maintenance and development of education, a total sum of R253-billion. The money will to a large extent be used build new schools. 433 new schools are to be developed in the coming 3 years and this will aid children the more than 9 million in the country side. The government has largely improved on the free school initiative. There has been an increase of 20% of schools that are free from the 40% figure of 2007. This had a big increase of the amount of children that can now attend school with a figure of 5 million in 2007 to 8.8 million in 2014. The government has also launched a school nutrition program that feeds all of these children this helps these children stay healthy and acts as an incentive to keep them in the education system. To improve on the quality of education and increase the total of qualified teachers the government started the Funza Lushaka bursary scheme for students who want to teach in the public schools. The scheme has helped produce 3000 graduates so far that are ready for placement in public schools. For tertiary education 21% of the education budget will be spent on National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) (R19 billion) and university subsidies (R21 billion). South-Africa can now be proud of its first university built in democratic times seen on Southfrica.info (2014). This is a huge achievement seeing that the last university that was built Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) , was 46 years ago. One other great initiative from government is the Green Paper for Post-School Education and Training. The Defeat of Many by One In The Moor’s Last Sigh, Salman Rushdie uses the complex and changing character of the Moor to represent a complex and changing image of India. By making the eclectic family history of the Da-Gama Zogoiby family the central theme in the first two parts of the novel, Rushdie portrays India as a culturally and religiously pluralistic society. This pluralistic society is layered by violence caused by the corruption of multiplicity by various characters and the threat of Hindu fundamentalism. As pluralism is defeated by fascism in Part Three of the novel, the nature of the violence changes drastically and is symbolized by the Moor’s significant character change: â€Å"The Moor whose tragedy-the tragedy of multiplicity destroyed by singularity, the defeat of Many by One-had been the sequences united principle† (Rushdie 408). The defeat of pluralism is not only the uniting principle in Aurora’s sequence of paintings, but also in Rushdie’s The Moorâ€℠¢s Last Sigh. Rushdie’s vision of India is essentially the battle between multiplicity and singularity and the consequential violence that has plagued India’s history. In the first two parts of the novel, Rushdie portrays the positive aspects of pluralism through the story of the Da-Gama Zogoiby family. The Moor’s grandfather, Camoens describes an ideal pluralistic world: A free country Belle, above religion because secular, above class because socialist, above caste because enlightened, above hatred because loving, above vengeance because forgiving, above tribe because unifying, above language because many tongued, above colour because multi-coloured, above poverty because ... ...lent singular vision, he ends rather optimistically. The Moor, at the end of his story and at the end of an explosion of violence lays his head down in hope for a better time. In the distance he sees the Alhambra, the Moors’ â€Å"triumphant masterpiece and their last redoubt† (Rushdie 433). Rushdie uses this beautiful metaphor of the Alhambra, â€Å"that monument of lost possibility that nevertheless has gone on standing† to convey the message that pluralism still has a fighting chance in India. (Rushdie 433) Rushdie suggests that just like the Moorish masterpiece withstood a fierce oppositional force and the test of time, so will India and its uniquely resilient and diverse society. Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by a person’s determination for faultlessness and a person’s will to set extremely high performance values. Many educators and parents view this as negative when their students or children must be perfectionists. Our society has even viewed perfectionism as a negative term. Research has stated that schools and educators have applied pressure to gifted students to attain high outcomes. Silverman stated students see that they are valued for what they do, not for who they are. I do believe educators, schools and parents have been guilty of this at some time in the student’s life. Can a student’s perfectionism be turned into a pursuit of excellence? After reading the articles and viewing the power point, there is research that states students can channel their perfectionism into â€Å"pursuits of excellence†. With educators’ and parents’ help, we can help perfectionist children see that being a perfectionist is not a negative trait, but a positive one. Jack (made-up name), a former student, reminds me of Sherman in the case study article by Jill L. Adelson. Jack is a gifted student and a mathematical wizard. I worked with him in math groups to accelerate his math skills with above grade-level problem-solving tasks. Often he would get so frustrated trying to solve a challenging word problem that he ended up wringing his hands, rocking his body against the table, and sometimes crying. Because he viewed math as his strength, when he was challenged in this subject and couldn’t solve a problem quickly, he often shut down and became frustrated. Although he considered himself a strong math student, he also read and comprehended above grade level. Yet, he perceived reading as being his weakness because learning math came so easy. (He saw reading as being hard. ) Before a reading benchmark he was already telling me he was not going to do well. Like the article stated, Jack had negative perfectionism in his academic pursuits. Jack’s type of perfectionism was an Academic Achiever. Like Sherman and Ivan, Jack set unrealistic academic goals and placed more emphasis on the end product instead of his efforts. Jack needed to pursue excellence by being encouraged by his teachers. I tried to encourage Jack to focus on his efforts and hard work instead of his final grade. I explained that he was being challenged in math groups because of his math solving ability and that I did not expect him to know all the nswers. I tried to make him realize how happy it made me that he tried so hard. He needed to learn from his mistakes and not punish himself mentally and physically. I think Jack developed this need to be a perfectionist from outward influences from his peers, parents, and possibly, his teachers. His parents may model the need to be perfect and therefore Jack perceived this notion that he needed to be perfect in academics. Students know who the â€Å"smart kids† are in their class and they place them on an academic pedestal. They know they will get the answer correct and often verbally point this out. Teachers are sometimes guilty of expecting their gifted students to know the correct answer and call on them more often. Perhaps, a previous teacher accidentally showed their disappointment when Jack was incorrect. There could be many other reasons Jack places so much pressure on his final grade and not his efforts. What is important is that Jack continues to be encouraged by his parents and educators that his pursuit of excellence is more important than the final grade. Effort and belief in oneself is what makes a gifted student academically strong. Students who suffer from being a perfectionist need to know that they can’t control the outcome, they can only control their efforts and attitude while reaching that outcome. Classrooms need to encourage and maintain that â€Å"risk-taking† is positive and your effort and attitude is just as important as the final grade. With interventions, counseling, and encouragement from adults, negative perfectionism can be channeled into positive pursuits of excellence.
